You can do projection mapping without a laptop using an iPhone or iPad, a projector, and a USB-C or Lightning to HDMI adapter (or AirPlay). The phone runs a mapping app that warps your video onto the surface, plays the media, and acts as the control surface — everything a laptop-plus-desktop-software rig does, in something that fits in a pocket. Here is exactly how to set it up.
What you need
- An iPhone or iPad running iOS 15.1 or later that can output video to an external display (most devices from the last several years).
- A mapping app such as EasyMapper Studio.
- A connection to the projector — either a USB-C or Lightning to HDMI adapter plus an HDMI cable, or AirPlay through an Apple TV or AirPlay-compatible projector.

- A way to hold the projector still — a small tripod, a clamp, or a stable shelf.
That is the entire rig. No computer, no media server, no external control desk.
Step by step: mapping from your phone
- Place and aim the projector first. Position it before you map anything — roughly square to your surface and locked down. Moving it later means remapping, so get this right before you touch the app.
- Connect the phone to the projector. Plug in the HDMI adapter, or start AirPlay. Your projector now mirrors the device.
- Import your media. Pull the videos or images you want from Photos or Files into a scene.
- Drag the corners onto the surface. For each layer, drag its four corners until the image lines up with the real edges of the wall, prop, or window. This corner warp is the heart of mapping.
- Layer and mask. Add a layer per surface, and mask off anything that should stay dark, so light only lands where you want it.
