What is projection mapping? A beginner's guide

Projection mapping turns walls, objects, and stages into animated surfaces. Here is how it works, what you need, and how to try it tonight with just a phone and a projector.

Projection mapping fits projected video to a real surface so the light belongs to the object. You need a projector, something to play from (an iPhone or iPad works), and a surface with edges. A first experiment takes about ten minutes.

Projection mapping is the technique of fitting projected video precisely onto a real surface — a wall, a doorway, a stack of boxes, a wedding cake — so the light appears to belong to the object instead of just landing on it.

A normal projector throws a flat rectangle. Projection mapping warps that rectangle so its corners line up with the corners of the thing you are pointing at. Once the geometry matches, anything you play — loops, animations, live shaders — looks painted onto the surface.

How it actually works

Every projection mapping setup, from a bedroom experiment to a stadium show, does the same three things:

  1. Define surfaces. You tell the software where the physical shapes are, usually by dragging the corners of a quad until they sit on the real edges of the object.
  2. Assign content. Each surface gets its own video, image, or generated visual.
  3. Warp and blend. The software distorts each layer so it lands exactly on its surface, compensating for the projector being off-centre, tilted, or too close.

The magic is entirely in step three. Because the projector is almost never perfectly square to the surface, the software applies a perspective warp — the same math that lets your phone camera de-skew a photographed document, run in reverse.

What you need to get started

Less than you think:

  • A projector. Any projector with an HDMI input works. Brightness matters more than resolution for a first attempt — a darker room forgives a dimmer projector.
  • Something to play content from. Traditionally a laptop running desktop software; with EasyMapper Studio, an iPhone or iPad and an HDMI adapter (or AirPlay) does the whole job.
  • A surface with edges. Flat walls are fine, but mapping feels most alive on things with geometry: a corner of a room, framed pictures, furniture, an archway.

A ten-minute first experiment

  1. Point the projector at a corner of a room, so the image bends across two walls.
  2. Create two layers, one per wall.
  3. Drag each layer's corners until its edges hug the real corner line.
  4. Drop a slow, looping visual on each side.

That corner-bend moment — when the warp locks in and the video suddenly belongs to the walls — is where most people get hooked.

Projection mapping shows up everywhere once you start noticing it: band backdrops and DJ booths, Halloween windows, product launches, museum installations, wedding decor, theatre sets. The workflow stays the same at every scale; only the projector budget changes.
