Looking for an AtmosFX alternative? EasyMapper Studio fits Halloween effects to your real windows, doors and pumpkins from an iPhone, with loops built in.

TL;DR

AtmosFX sells pre-made Halloween projection videos ($25 to $45 per pack on USB) that you play full-frame through a projector. EasyMapper Studio is an iPhone and iPad app that maps the projection onto your real windows, doors, pumpkins and props, ships Halloween loops and interactive effects, and costs $39.99 a year for everything (free to download). Choose AtmosFX for its big library of film-quality characters; choose EasyMapper Studio to fit effects to your house, or use both.

If you're looking for an AtmosFX alternative, you probably already own a projector and know the appeal: point it at a window, play a ghost, and the street stops to look. AtmosFX built that category with its digital decorations. EasyMapper Studio comes at it from a different angle. Instead of a rectangle of video, it fits the projection to the real shapes of your house: inside each window frame, around the door, onto every pumpkin on the porch, all set up from an iPhone or iPad.

This page compares the two honestly, including where AtmosFX is the better buy, and how to use both together.

01

What does AtmosFX sell, and how does it work?

AtmosFX sells pre-made projection videos it calls digital decorations: ghosts, zombies, singing jack-o'-lanterns, witches and Christmas scenes, filmed or animated to a high standard. On its own store, collections on USB drives cost $25 to $45, with most at $39.99 or $40. It also sells projector kits, projection screens (including the Hollusion screen for the floating-ghost look) and props.

The videos play full-frame: you play the file from a USB stick, media player or laptop, and the projector shows the whole rectangle. That's perfect behind a window screen or a hanging Hollusion sheet, where the screen itself sets the shape. It's less good on a house front, where a rectangle of light spills over brick, gutters and the lawn.

02

How is EasyMapper Studio different?

EasyMapper Studio is a projection mapping app. You connect your iPhone or iPad to the projector over HDMI or AirPlay, add a layer for each surface, and drag its corners onto the real edges: a window, the door, a garage panel, a pumpkin. Each layer plays its own content, and everything outside the layers stays dark. That's what makes a projected face look like it's inside the pumpkin, or a ghost look like it's behind the glass.

It also comes with content. The app ships built-in Halloween loops, six animated pumpkin faces for no-carve pumpkin projection, live shaders like Pumpkin Face and Glowing Eyes, and interactive room effects such as Bat Swarm and Pumpkin Drop that bounce off the surfaces you've mapped.

What about AtmosFX's illumibot projection mapping kit?

AtmosFX now also sells the illumibot Projection Mapping Kit for $400: a box that connects to your projector over HDMI. You point your phone camera at the surface, describe what you want, and cloud AI generates visuals fitted to it. It needs Wi-Fi, its app and a subscription for the AI generations, and the projector isn't included.

If you want AI to design the visuals for you, it's a genuinely different product. If you'd rather place every surface yourself and keep using the phone you already own, EasyMapper Studio does the mapping on the phone you already own, with no extra hardware.

05

When is AtmosFX the better choice?

Be honest with yourself about what you want on the night:

  • Film-quality characters. If the goal is a realistic ghost bride or a zombie banging on the glass, AtmosFX's library is the reason people buy it. EasyMapper Studio's loops and effects are animated, not filmed actors.
  • One screen, zero setup. A single Hollusion sheet in a doorway with one AtmosFX video playing is hard to beat for simplicity. There's nothing to map.
  • No phone in the setup. If you want a USB stick in the projector and nothing else, AtmosFX's USB drives do exactly that.

EasyMapper Studio is the better fit when you want the light to follow your house: several windows at once, the door frame, a row of pumpkins, props in the yard, or effects that react to what's there.

06

Can you use AtmosFX videos in EasyMapper Studio?

Yes, if you have the video files. Anything in your Photos or Files app can go on a mapped layer, so a ghost video you've bought can play fitted inside one window frame while built-in effects run on the door and the pumpkins. That's often the best of both: AtmosFX's characters, framed precisely, with the rest of the house mapped around them. Keep to the personal-use terms of whatever you've bought.

07

How do you set up EasyMapper Studio instead?

  1. Connect. Plug your iPhone or iPad into the projector you already use for AtmosFX, with a USB-C or Lightning to HDMI adapter, or use AirPlay (connection guide).
  2. Map. Add a layer per window, door or prop and drag its corners onto the real edges with the lights on.
  3. Fill and play. Drop a built-in loop, a pumpkin face, a room effect or your own video on each layer, then turn the lights off.

The first evening takes under an hour; after that the saved map is one tap a night. The full house walkthrough is in the Halloween projection mapping guide.

AtmosFX alternative: common questions

Do I need a new projector?

No. The projector you use for AtmosFX works, as long as it has an HDMI input (or AirPlay). For a house front you'll want around 3,000 lumens; for a window or pumpkins, much less. See how many lumens you need.

Is EasyMapper Studio free?

It's free to download. Premium unlocks the full feature set for $7.99 a month or $39.99 a year, with a free trial.

Does it work with a Hollusion or window screen?

Yes. Map a layer to the screen's edges and the effect stays inside it, which is useful when the screen sits at an angle to the projector. The Halloween window projection page covers the rear-projection setup.

Is there an Android or Windows version?

Not yet. EasyMapper Studio runs on iPhone and iPad (iOS 15.1 or later).

AtmosFX is a trademark of its owner; EasyMapper Studio isn't affiliated with it. To try the fitted approach on your own house tonight, download EasyMapper Studio and map your first window.
