Free projection mapping software in 2026: the options that actually work

Free projection mapping software compared for 2026: free desktop tools, free trials with watermarks, and free iPhone apps, and which one suits a beginner.

TL;DR

Free projection mapping software falls into three groups: free open-source desktop tools (VPT 8, MapMap) that cost nothing but need a computer and some patience; free versions of paid software (MadMapper, HeavyM) that watermark or limit the output; and free phone apps like EasyMapper Studio, which maps and plays from an iPhone or iPad with no laptop. For a beginner with one projector, a free app is the fastest start. For a free desktop setup, start with VPT 8.

Free projection mapping software exists, but "free" means very different things depending on where you look. Some tools are genuinely free and open source but need a computer and patience. Some are free versions of paid software that stamp a watermark on everything. And some are free phone apps that do the core job on the iPhone you already own. In the clip beside this article, two surfaces are mapped from an iPhone running EasyMapper Studio, which is free to download.

Here's what each free option does, what the catch is, and which one to start with.

01

What should free projection mapping software do?

Every mapping tool, free or paid, needs to do four things:

  • Corner pinning. Drag the four corners of the picture onto the corners of a real surface, so it fits even when the projector is at an angle.
  • Several surfaces. Map more than one shape from one projector, each with its own content.
  • Masks. Black out the parts you don't want lit.
  • Live adjustment. See the result on the real surface while you drag.

If a free tool can't do those, it's a video player, not mapping software.

02

Which free desktop projection mapping software is best?

  • VPT 8. Free and open source, for macOS and Windows. Mesh warping, many layers and support for passing video between apps. Powerful, but the interface takes time to learn. The best fully free desktop choice.
  • MapMap. Free and open source, for macOS, Windows and Linux. Simple and lightweight, but development has slowed, so check that it runs on your system before planning a show around it.
  • TouchDesigner. Free for non-commercial use, with a resolution limit. Hugely capable, but it's a visual programming tool, so mapping means building a project from nodes.

All three need a laptop or desktop connected to the projector for the whole show.

03

What about free versions of paid software?

MadMapper and HeavyM both let you try their software for free. The catch is the output: MadMapper's free version watermarks video output, so it's fine for learning but not for a real show. Paid MadMapper starts at 399 euros (excluding tax) or 39 euros a month. HeavyM sells several editions, to buy or rent-to-own.

These are the right tools if you're learning toward professional work. The MadMapper alternative page compares MadMapper with a phone app in detail.

04

Is there a free projection mapping app for iPhone?

Yes. EasyMapper Studio is free to download and maps and plays from an iPhone or iPad (iOS 15.1 or later) over HDMI or AirPlay. You add a layer, drag its corners onto the surface and play a video, a photo or a live shader on it. There's no computer in the setup.

Premium ($7.99 a month or $39.99 a year, with a trial) unlocks unlimited layers, the shader library, custom stencils and seasonal loops. A single month covers a Halloween or Christmas season. The best projection mapping apps for iPhone article compares the mobile options.

05

Which free option should a beginner pick?

  • One projector, a house, a room or a party, and an iPhone or iPad: start with a free app. You'll have something on the wall in one evening.
  • A free setup on a computer you already have: start with VPT 8.
  • Planning to work professionally: learn on MadMapper's or HeavyM's free version, then buy when you have a paid job.

Whichever you choose, the projector matters as much as the software. The projection mapping for beginners guide covers the basics, and the lumens guide explains how bright it needs to be.
